Adri is having fun painting! |
This method is also better for making cookies ahead to mail or freeze as you don't have to worry about ruining the icing.
Here is what you do:
- Mix up your sugar cookie dough. Below is my favorite cut out cookie recipe. I't's from the Betty Crocker Cookie Cookbook. I have used this recipe since I was in grade school and it's still my favorite.
- For each color you want to paint with, put one egg yolk in a custard cup or small bowl.
- Mix food coloring into each yolk. Colors will be a little muted due to the orange of the yolk while raw, but will brighten as the cookies are baked. I used paste colors: Country Blue, Lemon yellow, magenta and green.
- Roll out and cut your cookies as usual. After they are on the cookie sheets you can paint them.
- Purchase some basic watercolor paint brushes like at the Dollar store. You will need one for each color.
- Put an apron on each child (since the food dyes can stain clothes) and let them have at it. :)
- Bake at 375 for approximately 10 minutes. Or until lightly golden.
Add food coloring to each yolk |
Once the cookies are baked, the colors will become a beautiful glossy coating. So pretty!
